Silence as Guide Line
Hopper is often associated with loneliness, sadness, depression. I think this is the best way to gravely miss a proper reception and perception of his art. There are paintings by Hopper in which wind blows and sailing boats move. However, so many of Hopper’s paintings seem to be without wind or even without air or better put without atmospheric movements. It is stillness which reigns and I have started thinking that stillness is one of the central “ideas” in Hopper’s painting. Everything else comes second or is employed by it.
